But first things first…

I can’t think about romance novels without thinking about the heart stopping heroes in those novels. By their behaviors, and in some cases, their words, they set out to get the woman they want by any means necessary. During the last year of his life, Malcolm X gave a speech and made popular the phrase – by any means necessary. Granted he used the phrase to encourage individuals to consider all tactics when it came to getting what they wanted, but that’s not much different than the heroes in our favorite romance novels. Our romance heroes are powerful, ruthless in some cases, sweet and conniving in others, yet, in the end they get what they want – their woman. So, instead of me listing all of my favorite romance heroes from historical romance novels to romantic suspense, I’ve picked two of my favorites.

Tyler Hollister from my novel – Blue Roses

Out of all of the stories I’ve written (and those that are in the queue to be written), Tyler Hollister is my favorite. I love, love, love him – and how he operates. He wants what he wants, and he’s not afraid to go after it. Here’s a little blurb about Blue Roses:

Where most women would welcome love from a wealthy, good-looking man, Chicago-based investment manager, Dallas Marcel, is not one of them. She will never let a man control her life again. That includes handsome entrepreneur, Tyler Hollister. Dallas is on track to making partner and she’s not letting anything or anyone get in her way. But when her life is put in danger, and a Ponzi scheme ignites a SEC investigation of her firm, she realizes the one man she’d banned from her heart, might be the only one who can save her career and her life.

Tall, dark, and handsome, Tyler Hollister can have any woman he wants, but he only wants one – Dallas. When he starts talking marriage, she breaks things off between them, claiming she doesn’t want a romantic entanglement to hinder her plight to making partner. A chance meeting, six months later, brings them face to face and Tyler soon realizes the intense sexual attraction they once shared is stronger than ever. But he swore he was done with her. Except he finds out her life is in danger, and his protective instincts take over. Can he save her life without losing his heart … again?

One of my other favorite heroes in a romance novel is: Derrick Hoffman from A Hard Man to Love by Delaney Diamond. Can I just say that Derrick’s personality jumped off the page and as the story progressed, the more in love I became! This man took the phrase By Any Means Necessary to a whole different level. Here’s a blurb about A Hard Man to Love:

Hating him is easy. Loving him is hard.

Derrick Hoffman never quite got over not having a relationship with his biological father. The woman he was seeing is pregnant, and there’s no way he’s going to let her raise his child without him—even if it means coercing her into marriage.

Eva Jacob made the mistake of falling in love with Derrick, a man she knows is incapable of love. After their breakup, she discovers she’s pregnant. When she agrees to a loveless marriage, she tries to shield her heart from further pain. But she soon discovers that the heart wants what the heart wants, and her heart wants Derrick’s love.

I Have A Dream

As most of you know, one of my dreams as a writer is to be featured in an anthology with Beverly Jenkins and Brenda Jackson – two of my favorite authors. I absolutely love reading anthologies whether they’re holiday themes, or subject based -like forgiveness, trust, or finding true love.  As long as this anthology include stories by the three of us – I’m good with any theme. With that said though, the other day I did come up with a SUPER cool title for the anthology (which means I already have an awesome theme in mind). I just wish I could share the details with you all, but I figured I should probably keep them to myself until I hear from Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs. Jackson (NOTE: I wanted to use their first names or call them the two BJ’s, but figured it might be too soon).

At any rate, I started thinking about how this could all play out.  For example: what will be our process for deciding on a theme for this anthology? As you know I have my own ideas, but I’m looking forward to hearing some of theirs. As for the genre –I’m thinking romance, but these ladies are so talented, it could be sweet, suspense, or historical romance. I also wonder what our book cover will look like. Will it have some gorgeous hunk gracing the cover, or will it portray a sweet, loving scene of romance like candles, roses, or a couple engaged in a loving kiss? I already figured the stories will be listed in this order: first Beverly Jenkins, then Sharon C. Cooper, and then Brenda Jackson. What can I say? I want to be in the middle and have one heavy hitter get us started, and the other bring it on home. Hey, if you’re going to dream, might as well dream big!

Now, during all of this dreaming and planning something dawned on me – will I be able to handle the pressure? We’re talking about two of the romance industry’s most beloved and talented authors! I’m pretty good about trying almost anything once (except for certain foods like slimy oysters and never recreational drugs), but this would be HUGE! Featured in a book with these two women is going to be beyond awesome! This will be one of the most amazing opportunities of my writing career- do I have what it takes? Determination? Courage to hang with the best? An over active imagination? After thinking about this question(s)  for all of two minutes, my answer is – heck yeah! I’ll be ready – I’m just waiting for them to call!

Okay, enough about me – what about you? If you’re a writer, who would you want to share a book (anthology) with? Or if you’re a singer or play an instrument, who would you want to share a stage with and why?

The Jenkins Family Series

Lately I’ve been receiving a few emails and inquiries on whether or not there will be a full-length novel featuring Toni (TJ) Jenkins and Craig from the short story – Best Woman for the Job. So I decided to share a little information on how the Jenkins Family came to be and what’s coming next.

When I wrote the short story, Best Woman for the Job, I created it for several reasons:

1. I wanted to do a story with a female tradesmen (or tradesperson).

2. I wanted to see if I was capable of writing a short story (smile).

3. I wanted to not only introduce an African American family that has strong family values, but a family with dynamic women overseeing the family’s construction business.

Well, based on the wonderful feedback that I’ve received thus far regarding Best Woman for the Job, there will definitely be a Jenkins Family Series!

In Toni (TJ) and Craig’s story, I introduced the Jenkins Family (Toni’s family) and their family business – Jenkins & Sons Construction. I had no idea that the concept of a tradeswoman and the short story itself, would be so well received.

Readers have wondered (and asked):

  • Will there be more on Toni & Craig (will they get their own novel)?
  • What about the other cousins – will they get their own stories?
  • Will there be more about Jenkins & Sons Construction?

And the answer to each of those questions is – YES!! I think the only complaint that I’ve heard so far from readers is that the story was too short  -hence short story- but from what I understand, the story left readers wanting more…much more. I also realize that I failed to mention at the end of Best Woman for the Job, that more was coming…soon!

In my other life (many, many years ago), I was a sheet metal worker. I worked in the trades for over ten years, and though it was an exciting line of work, where I learned a lot and work with some wonderful men, there were definitely some challenges of being a woman in a male dominate field. So I’ve decided to bring out some of those challenges in the Jenkins Family Series.

Also in my other life (numerous years ago), I ran our family business (one of my brothers oversees it now). Our family is not as large as the Jenkins Family, but we grew up with strong family values, understanding the importance of loyalty not only to the family, but to the family business. And like you’ll see in the Jenkins Family Series, maintaining those values are not always easy – but the love of a strong family will get you through some tough times.

Needless to say, I’m SUPER excited about this series that will be coming in 2013. So make sure you stay tuned for: Toni & Craig’s story (a full-length novel this time); Peyton (PJ) Jenkins – she’s not only an electrician, but she’s brilliant at running the family’s construction business; Martina (MJ) Jenkins – a carpenter, and the hot head of the family (she’s a trip!); Christina (CJ) Jenkins – the painter and the sweetest person in the world; and Jada (JJ) Jenkins – the sheet metal worker in the family – who is sassy…and maybe a little misunderstood. Lol! And you’ll be introduced to a host of others in the Jenkins family.

I assure you, it will be a fun series with multi-dimensional characters and enticing story lines. So stay tuned!

TBR – To Be Read

The other day I went through my e-reader specifically with the intent of better organizing my books. I already had folders created for some of my favorite authors (which include their titles), but I didn’t have a good system in place for some of the other books that I’ve read or books that are waiting to be read (and will be read).

So it got me to thinking. I wondered what you did about your TBR lists or piles -and what are some of the titles on your TBR list? How do you keep them separate from books that you’ve already read?

I’m an avid reader, but there are so many wonderful books out there that I can’t keep up. I seem to add books to my TBR list on a daily basis – but I can honestly say – I’m looking forward to reading each and every one of those books. Here are just a few of the titles on that list:

The Pick-Up Wife – W. Lynn Chantale

Deadly Deception – Alexa Grace

North Star – Angeline Bishop

A Family Affair – Mary Campisi

A Wish and a Prayer (A Blessings Novel) – Beverly Jenkins

In The Moment – Vallory Vance

Tease (Write Brothers) – Deatri King-Bey

Just One Look (Women of Substance) – Marilyn Lee

Okay, it’s your turn. What are some of the titles on your TBR list? Or what are you reading now?
