When It Comes To Desire, They’re Both Pleading Guilty

The big day is almost here – the release day for LEGAL SEDUCTION!

June 1st is right around the corner, so I thought I’d give you a little preview of the highly anticipated (smile) story of Iris Sinclair and Nash Dupree.

Description

When it comes to desire, they’re both pleading guilty.

In the courtroom, criminal defense attorney Iris Sinclair is cool and confident. Yet, around her new client’s guardian, she loses all composure. Atlanta club owner Nash Dupree is an infamous playboy who could compromise Iris’s heart as well as her case. For once, she feels like a curvy goddess instead of a strait-laced lawyer—even if the evidence suggests what he’s looking for is strictly short-term.

No matter what the tabloids claim, Nash has made his teenage niece his first priority, and without Iris’s help he’ll lose guardianship. What began as seduction, a sweet thrill, has turned into something more—now he wants Iris forever. But proving his intentions means winning her trust before his reputation drives away the only woman who has ever captivated him, body and soul…

Before you read the excerpt:

Recently, someone asked me that if LEGAL SEDUCTION had a sound track, what would be some of the songs that might appear on it? I thought this was a great question – something I had never thought about! So while I thought about some of the scenes in the story, all types of songs came to mind. I had so much fun thinking about my “soundtrack” until I’ve decided to do one for all of my future stories! I’ll share the complete soundtrack for LEGAL SEDUCTION with you in the near future. But in the meantime – though the excerpt below is only a small portion of what I call – the basketball game scene – the song that I thought would be most appropriate for it is: Bump N’ Grind by R Kelly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAXxkNaRkp8

Excerpt

Nash dribbled the ball. “Do you play?” he asked, holding up the basketball.

“I used to.”

“How about a little one-on-one?” He shot the ball from the three-point line and made it. He then followed that with an easy layup.

Iris had played basketball in high school and received an athletic scholarship to attend Spelman College, but hadn’t played ball much since then. She knew she could hold her own against Nash, but basketball was a contact sport, and too much of that with him probably wouldn’t be a good idea. As it was, she could barely breathe whenever he was close, and the way he made a simple touch feel like a sensual caress sent brazen thoughts straight to her brain.

“So, what do you say?” Nash continued shooting around, making one basket after another.

“About what?”

“About playing. How about a game?”

“I don’t know, Nash. You clearly play often and I don’t want to embarrass myself.”

“I play, but not often. I’m sure you’ll do fine. Besides, it’s just me and we’ll just be playing around for fun.”

She pulled her bottom lip between her teeth and thought about it for a few seconds. “Oh, what the heck, why not?”

Iris sat her bag on the bottom bleacher. She removed her sweater and tossed it next to the bag, leaving her with a white T-shirt and jeans on.

Nash threw her the ball. “Let’s play to eleven, counting by ones.” He tugged his shirt out of his pants and lifted it over his head.

Iris was sure her heart stopped at that moment. She breathed in, trying to get oxygen to her lungs, but it wasn’t working. Her head spun at the sight of his smooth, chiseled chest sprinkled with a light sheen of perspiration, his muscles contracting with every move. She tried not to stare, but she couldn’t help it. His well-defined pecs were perfectly sculpted. She had always assumed he had an amazing body, but his flawless physique was way beyond her imagination.

“Uh, you can’t play like that,” she stuttered and the basketball slipped out of her hands and rolled a few feet away. She licked her lips and swallowed hard when Nash turned and faced her, giving her a better view of his enticing body.

“Play like what?” He frowned.

“Like…” She gestured at his body with a wave. “Like that. Put your shirt back on.”

As realization of the problem dawned on Nash, he grinned and moved closer to Iris. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears and her stomach dropped when he made his pecs dance.

“Does my being half-naked bother you?”

Hell, yeah, it bothers me, she thought, but said nothing. She only continued to stare at the smoothness of his skin, appreciating how his broad shoulders tapered down to flat abs and a narrow waist.

“You know―” Nash yanked on one of her belt loops and pulled her closer, his mouth so close she could smell his fresh breath “―you could take off your shirt, too, if you feel that you’re at a disadvantage. I won’t mind.”

*

That happens to be one of my favorite scenes in the book, not only because it was fun to write, but it’s a little freaky too (LOL!). I look forward to hearing what you think of the scene (I think), but you’ll need to purchase the book first!

Though the official release date is June 1st, you can get your copy of LEGAL SEDUCTION today! How?

You can go to any store in your area that sells books (Target, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, etc) and purchase a paperback copy. OR you can purchase a copy online: Amazon (paperback – available now), Amazon (ebook – delivered June 1st to your Kindle), or Barnes and Noble

And if you’ve already read and enjoyed the story, leave a comment below or go ahead and leave a review at Amazon (paperback page). I can’t wait to see / hear what you thought of the story!

The count down until release day has officially begun – four more days!

EXCERPT

“Tell me again why you can’t stay?” Tristan says as we stand in front of the elevator.

“Because it’s just not a good idea. And I don’t have anything to wear.”

“Actually, you do,” he says. “Mrs. Naven found some things in the laundry after you left. Problem solved.” He takes both my hands and backs up into the sitting room.

“Tristan, we still have some things to sort out. Tonight was great, but I still don’t think I’m cut out to be your submissive.”

“Just my submissive?”

I drop my head. “No. Anyone’s.”

“You’re afraid you’ll have panic attacks again, aren’t you?”

I feel like I’m about to be swallowed up by the sincere blue eyes tracking and pinning mine so effectively I can’t look away. “Yes. And I’m no use to you if I can’t endure the scenes, particularly the occasional disciplinary consequences.”

“What if there was a way you could?” His finger traces a gentle path down my cheek.

“What do you mean?”

“Just what I said. If there was a way we could work around the panic attacks, would you come back? For good?”

“You mean until you perfect your exit strategy? That’s what you venture capitalists call it, don’t you?”

“Ah, someone’s been paying attention at our semiannual business meetings?”

“I have a rather exacting mentor who insists on being heard.”

“Asshole,” he says and pulls me close.

I place my hands on his chest in an effort to sustain some emotional equilibrium, but he doesn’t let me go. “I’m the one who’ll be ass-out when you lose confidence in your investment and decide it’s time to diversify your portfolio again.”

“I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon, Keisha.” He draws me closer, palming my hips, and I get his point. Pun intended. “I can’t seem to get enough of you.”

I slip out of his arms and put some space between us. “Chemistry has never been an issue for us, Tristan. I know your lifestyle is important to you, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up.”

The truth is, I’m hopelessly in love with a man who hasn’t given me any indication that he will ever want a real relationship. Nothing has changed on that front. He still just wants just a Dominant/submissive relationship, which might enjoy a longevity his other arrangements haven’t had, but it will eventually end.

Can I really do this? I certainly don’t think I’ll become any less in love with him over time. Reentering a sexual relationship with Tristan now would be exceedingly counterproductive to the reasons I left in the first place, but I am hard-pressed to make myself walk away again.

Tristan moves so close behind me that I can feel the warmth of his skin, his breath wafting over my ear as he speaks. “We’ll take things slow—again.”

He runs a finger along my arm, and gooseflesh sprouts like ivy in its wake. I feel a pull toward him that can only be described as magnetic—my body eager to be reunited to his. Even though it could conceivably be more painful for me this time around, I’m not sure if leaving him again is within the realm of possibility. I can’t rationalize staying, but leaving becomes increasingly more difficult with each second I remain in his presence.

I turn to face him. “Slow isn’t necessarily going to keep the attacks at bay.” Or guard my heart if he decides he’s done with me.

“We’ll figure out a way to do that together.” He takes me into his arms again. “These three weeks have been … just please stay.”

I look into his eyes, and all I want to do at that moment is kiss him senseless. He may not have given me a declaration of love, but somehow I know this is as close as I’m going to get with a man like Tristan White. For now.

As an answer, I stand on my tiptoes, throw my arms around his neck, and kiss him with everything in me.

Legal Seduction – Did You Know?

Did you know that RT Book Reviews (Romantic Times Magazine) chose LEGAL SEDUCTION as one of their “Top Picks” for June 2014?!

legal seduction - book cover

Okay, so a few weeks ago, other authors started shooting me emails and inboxing me about LEGAL SEDUCTION, my debut Harlequin Kimani novel (coming June 1st). They were congratulating me because LEGAL SEDUCTION was chosen by RT as one of their “Top Picks” for June 2014. Now me, being me, didn’t have a clue to what that meant. So I shot a quick email to Candace Shaw and she’s the one who told me that RT was Romantic Times, but neither of us knew what the “Top Picks” was all about.

After receiving several emails, and a few people inboxing me via Facebook, I started to think – I need to know more about this RT thing. NOTE: That was my exact thought. Mind you, I was getting a little more excited with each email, inbox message and super excited when I talked with one of my critique partners (one of several) on the telephone who subscribes to the magazine. She’s kinda like my own personal “Hype Man”! No joke – I think she was even more excited than I was because she actually had access to a digital copy of the June 2014 magazine. Oh, but getting back to the “Hype Man” part. In hip hop, a hype man typically gets a crowd hyped up…kinda interjects here and there during a song. Well this particular critique partner is usually the person who gets me hyped up about my stories (good and sometimes not so good). I could go on and on about her. She’s the one who talks me into writing stories I had no intention of writing and quick to tell me if she likes…or if she doesn’t like something I’ve written. Lol! And she HATES the word “it” (which I use ALL the time)! Needless to say, she drives me nuts! But I can’t imagine my writing journey without her! But I digress…

So after one particular author inboxed me (my excitement even higher), I made the comment – “So this must be a big deal, because several authors have reached out to congratulate me.” I can’t remember her exact words – but it was something like – Uh…yeah! This is a big deal! Then she sent me a screen shot of the review page. For whatever reason, whenever I tried to log-on to the RT site, it would time out – not let me on. At any rate, before that day was over, several people had sent me the actual review. Here it is:

RT Review – Reviewed by B. Nakia Garner

After growing up in the foster care system, Iris Sinclair has dedicated her life to defending teens in courts. Her latest client is Tania, niece of millionaire Nash Durpree. The case brings Iris and Nash closer than either of them ever thought possible when Iris becomes the temporary guardian of Tania. While Iris tries to convince herself that she is worthy of a man’s love, Nash must decide if he’s ready to love again. Steamy sex scenes that will have you flushing with heat make this tale a must-read. The passion leaps off the pages, and readers will get lost in the romance. You won’t want to put this book down.

I thought – this person must’ve really enjoyed the book. Then I saw that it had received 4.5 stars! Of course, me being me, I wondered what I needed to do to get a full 5 stars since it sounded like the reviewer really enjoyed the story. Now this part is funny – The person who edited LEGAL SEDUCTION congratulated me and I thanked her for all of her assistance with the story. I went on to tell her that next time, we’ll see if we can get 5 stars instead of just 4.5 stars. Now those of you who are familiar with RT’s rating scale are probably laughing right about now. The editor said to me, I can’t remember her exact words, but it was someting like – actually 4.5 is the highest rating you can get. Now at this point, my excitement level was off the charts! I had to bust out with my happy dance!!

So hopefully you’ll enjoy LEGAL SEDUCTION as much as the RT reviewer did! Here’s a description of the story:

Excerpt

“That’s what’s so special about you. Somehow you always see the best in everyone and you find a way to pull it out. Everyone doesn’t have that gift, Ivy.” Raymond lowered his lips to kiss hers.

She smiled as she danced in his arms enjoying the feel of his soft cool lips against her warm ones. As Olivia continued to sway in his arms she slightly parted her lips, allowing his tongue to enter her mouth. The warm rush flowing through her veins, and the slightly heady sense she experienced at the feel of his hands rubbing her back up and down was intoxicating.

Raymond’s mouth pulled away from hers and kissed the lower angle of her jawline. He squeezed her waist between his hands and then pulled away from her.

“What the hell am I gonna do with you, Ivy?” Raymond asked in frustration, walking away rubbing his hands over his low cut hair.

“Maybe I should go now.” Olivia walked to the living room table and picked up her keys and purse.

“Look, come on. I’m sorry. We’ve had a great evening. I don’t want it to end like this.”

“Well what am I supposed to do Ray? I told you where I stood before we decided to move forward in this relationship and you said you understood. You said you supported me. If you can’t do this, I completely understand and respect your decision. But I’m not going to play games. You know where I stand.”

“You’re right, I do know where you stand. But for how long?” Raymond was standing with his back against the wall, arms crossed over his chest, looking absolutely miserable. Olivia wished she could make things better for him, but this was where they both had to make their decisions.

“You know how long.”

“No, I don’t, Ivy. The only thing you said was that you made the decision to be celibate. You never said for how long.”

“And you didn’t question it, Ray. You simply told me, and I quote, ‘The only thing I was sure of after the divorce, was that I wanted to re-connect with you. You’re the one thing I am certain about, and if that means I have to be celibate, too, then I support you. I just want you in my life, Ivy.’ Was that not what you told me, word for word?” Olivia asked with her keys in her hands and her purse clenched tightly underneath her arm.

“Yes it was.”

“So you’re backing out now?” Olivia could feel her heart sinking and her dreams walking out the door. But she knew he hadn’t made her any promises and she could understand if he chose not to stay around in that capacity in her life. She respected whatever decision he made.

“How long, Ivy?” he repeated.

“Until I’m married. And I know where you stand on that. You made yourself pretty clear.”

Prescription for Desire by Candace Shaw

I love it when my author friends come and hang out with me!

Join me in welcoming back author Candace Shaw to my blog! Candace is introducing us to her new release – Prescription for Desire and sharing a hot excerpt!

Prescription for Desire

Blurb

Dr. Raven Arrington has found herself in the same mundane routine for the past three years after her husband’s death. Needing a change of scenery, she escapes to a little town outside of Buenos Aries to work temporarily at a medical facility. Raven didn’t realize what prescription of medicine she needed until she meets Chief of Staff, Dr. Armand Phillips. The gray-eyed, sinfully suave doctor awakens a part of her she’d suppressed with just the right dose of desire.

Armand knows having a fling with a co-worker is a prescription for trouble, but the older, sophisticated doctor is like no other woman he’s met. He’s used to no responsibilities outside of his career and loves his freedom to travel wherever needed. However, Armand is willing to sacrifice in order to make Raven his, despite her reservations, and to give her what she wants more than anything.

Excerpt

Raven opened the door, and collided into a white-coated chest. Her hands rested on pure hardness that radiated strength and power from him. Strength and power that she could only imagine handling her exactly how she wanted in the bedroom or wherever. He seemed the type of man that could get busy whenever or wherever need be, considering he’d mentioned laying her out on the desk in her office. She hadn’t been able to sleep for the past two nights with that comment lodged in her brain.

“Excuse me, Dr. Phillips.” Her hands balled into fists when she realized they were still pressed against him. She immediately jerked them away, placing them in the pockets of her white coat.

“Sorry,” he said as his eyes roamed over her before they settled on her face with a knowing gleam. “Um … I was just going into the supply room.” He took out his keys and stepped toward the door across the hall from her exam room.

“While you’re in there, can you get me a box of hand sanitizer? I’m almost out.” She turned to walk down the hall, but he gently grabbed her hand and pulled her into the room with him.

“What?” she whispered as Armand closed the door.

He grinned. “Why are you whispering? There’s no rule against us being in the supply room. You need hand sanitizer, don’t you?”

Heat rushed over her face. A part of her was glad that was the only reason he pulled her into the room, but another part of her actually thought he was going to extinguish the fire that blazed in her when she ran into him. Correction. That had blazed in her since their tryst in his apartment.

“Yes … I just …” She raked her hair behind her ears. “I just thought you could grab them for me, Dr. Phillips.” She tried to concentrate on the task of breathing, but she wasn’t having any luck.

The side of his mouth etched into a grin. “You have a patient waiting?”

He stepped closer, and she moved back with a gulp, finding herself against a shelf.

“No.”

He reached his hand out, and she sucked in her breath. She thought he was about to caress her face, but instead his arm passed her and slid something down from the shelf above her. Backing out of her personal space, he handed her a box.

“Do you need more than one? There’re four containers in here.”

She glanced at the box of hand sanitizer in her hands and realized how paranoid she’d been. Apparently he was keeping his promise of not mixing business with pleasure. Deep down, she wanted to forget they’d agreed to it.

“No.” Relief swept over her, and her breathing relaxed. “This should be plenty.”

“Anything else you need while we’re here?”

Was that a trick question?

“I’ll look around,” Raven said, setting the box on a swivel chair, feeling much better and comfortable. She laughed at the thought of them actually making out in the supply room. She didn’t even know why that notion had crossed her mind in the first place. Oh wait, it was because the night in his apartment hadn’t left her mind, or that sensitive spot that made her a woman.

She took a few moments to browse the shelves and rack her brain for any other supplies her three examination rooms were almost out of. They were usually well stocked, thanks to the medical assistants, but she had a habit of overusing sanitizer. She glanced at Armand, who stood by the door, and she grabbed a box of gloves.

“Am I keeping you from something?” she asked, wondering why he was just standing there watching her and not gathering whatever it was he needed.

“Nope.” Armand shrugged nonchalantly with his hands in his pockets. “I have a conference call with the board in an hour, so I’m good. Take your time.”

She glanced around the small room again before her eyes settled back on his handsome face. “I believe I have everything I need. I’ll just leave so you can get whatever it is you want,” she said, turning toward the swivel chair to retrieve the box.

“Then you can’t leave,” he whispered.

Raven stopped in her tracks at his words. Her breathe halted in her throat, and her pulse raced as she waited with baited breath for his next move.

Armand’s hands reached under her coat and pulled her by the waist to his body. Juicy, thick lips hit the back of her neck and she exhaled a moan of relief. The warmth of his mouth on her skin sent tingles racing through her. The box of gloves dropped to her feet, and she clasped her hands in his to hold on, for she feared she’d fall over just from the passionate way his tongue ravished her neck uncontrollably.

“How did you know I wanted you to touch me? Kiss me?” Her breathing became unraveled again.

“You told me,” he answered gruffly. His hands roamed over her breasts while his mouth continued to press kisses all over her bare neck, reaching around to her collarbone.

“I never … said … a word.” She could barely stand up straight; heat ran through her body, lingering between her legs.

“Remind me to have a mirror the next time you’re in my presence. Your face told me everything I needed to know. Oh, yeah, and your breathing was somewhat staggered. Either you wanted me to touch you, or you’re having a heart attack.”

“What if someone comes in?” she whispered as his lips moved to her jawline. She turned her body to imprison his lips, winding her tongue with his in a fast rumba.

“Then we’re caught.”

Normally a statement like that would’ve had Raven pushing him away and sprinting out of the room without her supplies. However, all logic and sensibility had escaped her the moment she met him. For some reason the thought of getting caught turned her on, and she kissed him more intensely, meeting and matching his powerful kisses.

Raven was on a high she couldn’t explain. The wild and crazy kisses were foreign to her, to say the least. While she wasn’t a prudish, buttoned up, kind of a woman, she wasn’t the type to get hot and heavy in the supply closet with the chief of staff who was younger than her. However, he’d unleashed a sexual side that she never knew existed. All of her inhibitions no longer mattered, and she could just be free with her emotions and feelings. She felt empowered, and more feminine than ever.

Keeping Secrets, The Essien Trilogy Book 1

BOOK BLURB

Have you ever loved someone and didn’t even know it?

That’s the dilemma facing Felix Essien when he wakes from a coma to find he is married to the most beautiful and sensual woman he’s ever known. He cannot remember her or their wedding; he who had sworn never to get married or to give his heart to another. Yet, he feels an intense bond with her that he intends to explore fully.

Ebony can’t believe her good fortune when her paper husband wakes not remembering the temporary marriage arrangement with no intimacies he’d proposed, and is now the adoring husband she’s always dreamt of.

She plans to make the most of the passion blossoming between them. However, would he still feel that way when he regains his memory and realises she’s been keeping secrets and their marriage is not what he thinks it is?

BOOK EXCERPT

“Mr. Essien, you are in the Worthington Hospital in Lagos. You were in a car accident and suffered several injuries, including a head trauma, resulting in you falling into a coma,” the doctor said after examining him thoroughly and offering him extra painkillers, which he rejected. He needed a clear head to chase away the fog lurking in his brain.

“How long have I been here?” he asked, anxiety coursing through him, prickling his skin.

“About six weeks. Can you remember what happened?” the doctor asked.

He’d barely taken in the physician’s name, simply noting the man’s position as a consultant surgeon in a reputable hospital and realising, from his looks, that they must be about the same age.

He racked his brain but couldn’t remember anything about an accident.

And he couldn’t shake the feeling of something being terribly wrong. Why couldn’t he remember?

“No. What day is it?” he asked to get his bearing. The doctor told him. Stunned, a bolt of alarm shot down his spine. “And you say I’ve been in a coma for over a month?”

“Yes. What do you remember?” the doctor enquired again.

“The last thing I remember is being on my way to the airport with my driver.”

Briefly, the doctor’s face creased in a frown before he spoke. “There is no cause for alarm. Some memory loss is expected with the kind of head injury you suffered. You are a healthy young man and with time, I expect you to make a full recovery. In the meanwhile, we’ll carry out some more tests and monitor your progress to ensure everything is healing as it should.”

After the doctor left, he’d drifted back into a hazy, restless sleep.

He woke with a dull ache in his head. Before his eyes opened, he lifted his hand to his forehead, massaging it. Heavy, drooping lids blinked several times as his eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight coming through the window, the black and white motif print curtains pulled back and secured with sashes.

Raising his right hand, he flicked his wrist, expecting to see his gold watch. Instead, a plastic hospital tag with his name hung in its place. Adhesive tapes secured the IV cannula to his left hand. He didn’t move it, so as not to dislodge the needle stuck into his veins. However, he’d insisted on having the catheter removed. About time he started using his legs again when nature called.

He scratched the stubble on his chin. Someone had been shaving him regularly. A nurse? Considering his room had the opulence of a hotel suite than that of a regular hospital ward, it could be part of the service. A quick brush over thick hairs on his head confirmed he needed a haircut, though.

He scanned his white-walled surroundings, where a TV screen hung on the wall opposite his bed, two chairs to the side, and a table sat in the corner with a vase of fresh African tulips, begonias, and delphiniums. The brilliant display of red, orange, pink, and white flora caught his attention. As he inhaled their light, crisp scent, he wondered who had sent the flowers. A card sat beside the vase but he didn’t bother reaching for it.

He scrubbed a hand over his face, his frustration rising. Why couldn’t he remember the accident or the events leading up to it? Perhaps if he focused on the things he could remember, he could work his way forward.

An Amazing Two Years

Two years ago, I self-published my first novel entitled: Something New. Eight books later and I can honestly say that I had no idea what my writing journey would bring.

Books by Sharon C -2014

It’s been an interesting ride. Exciting, surprising, and at times downright exhausting, but if I had to pick just one word to describe the journey, I’d have to say it’s been AMAZING! The brainstorming, researching, writing, starting over, writing some more, editing, editing, editing some more, and finally typing – THE END – has been an amazing experience!

I won’t go into great detail about the last two years, but if you want to read snippets of my writing journey, everything from when I created my own book deal, to signing on to write for Harlequin Kimani, here are a few links:
