EXCERPT

Nancy Redmond was pissed the second her cell phone dinged, signaling an incoming text. If she wasn’t in one of Chicago’s five-star restaurants on New Year’s Eve, she would have made a scene. Bright red lips pursed, she glanced around the dimly-lit dining room at the other patrons. Their faces illuminated by flickering candles on the tables, they chatted and dug forks into succulent meats, while sipping on wine. Meanwhile, her stomach made obnoxious noises because she was so hungry.

Blindly, her hand searched the inside of the clutch on the chair beside her for her phone. A soft gust of air blew past her lips. Just as she thought, Christopher had texted to cancel their dinner date. It was the third time this month he’d bailed out on her at the last minute. The first time she understood because he forgot about a school event he was supposed to attend for his six-year-old kid. Being that her dad pretty much forgot about her after he and her mom divorced when she was four, Nancy refrained from catching an attitude. Every child needed their father in the picture. That’s what she believed and, besides, she didn’t want to be responsible for keeping a kid and his father apart.

Though she was livid, Nancy couldn’t help the smile that touched her lips. Her bestie, Daphne Turner-Collins, had praised her when she told her how mature she’d behaved and hadn’t flipped out on Christopher for ditching her.

“Look at you acting all grown up,” Daphne had teased.

Of course Nancy couldn’t resist telling her to “shut up.”

The second time he’d texted to cancel on their date to see Maxwell three hours before show time, Nancy couldn’t bite her tongue. His excuse this time had been his baby’s momma, Ebony, had an emergency and he had to go to the rescue to watch their son. The chick had four sisters. Nancy found it strange that not one of them was available to babysit. This time when Nancy told Daphne about Christopher jumping ship, she did admit his timing was suspect.

Before she could cuss Christopher out via text, the waiter walked up to the table.

“Miss, can I get you something to drink while you wait for your party to arrive?”

My Lord. Stephan the waiter was too fine for his own good. He wasn’t as tall as Nancy liked her men. But his flawless expresso complexion, heavily-lidded bedroom eyes and full lips made up for what he lacked in the height department. Her eyes discreetly, or so she thought, drifted to his feet. Nancy had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from groaning.

When she finally looked back up into Stephan’s handsome face, he was grinning at her and undressing her with his eyes. Heat fanned across her cheeks as she delicately cleared her throat. Somebody appreciated the effort she’d put into looking good tonight. Stephan and his fine self, for the time being, put her anger on simmer. His lingering gaze made her feel sexy and not rejected. Later for Christopher. A drink or two, something to eat and any excuse to keep Stephan coming back will keep the night from being a total bust.

“He’s not coming. I’ll be eating alone.”

Nancy hated how her voice lightly quivered the way it did right before you’re ready to cry. She wanted to jump across the table and wrap her arms and legs around Stephan when he murmured for her ears only, “He’s a damn fool. Sis, you’re beautiful. You deserve better.”

Yes, I do! “Thank you.”

By the time Nancy drank three glasses of wine, stuffed her face with savory seasoned lamb chops, grilled brussels sprouts, and red velvet cake, her mood had soured again. Couple after couple floated through the revolving glass doors, hugged up as they sought refuge from the cold.

Envy was such an ugly emotion that had taken Nancy years to combat. She could feel its familiar tentacles crawling up her insides as the couples were ushered past her table. Surrounding her like happy sharks in an ocean of sappy love, holding hands and grinning as they spoke in hushed tones. Nancy had to get out of there when the dude at the table across from her slid a ring box across the white linen tablecloth. She rolled her eyes when the young woman gasped before covering her mouth with both hands.

“Aw, crap.”

Nancy realized she was louder than she intended when dude shot her the evil eye. But she could care less about his funky proposal or the fact that she probably spoiled the mood. Her glass of red wine toppled over when she abruptly stood, spilling the contents and splattering the front of the overpriced dress she’d bought to impress Christopher.

Tucking her clutch under her arm, Nancy slightly staggered her way to the ladies’ room. Now in front of the mirror, tears stung the back of her eyes as her gaze went to the tiny spots the red wine made against the cream-colored fabric of the dress she wore. It felt like her entire life was nothing but one big stain beginning with her conception. Only two things had ever gone right in her life. Her friendship with Daphne and owning her own business.

Well, maybe three. After years of being at odds with her mother, Madeline, they were finally in a good place. Recently they were able to pick up where they left off when she was a teenager. Just as they were getting settled into a comfortable mom-daughter relationship, Madeline moved to Haddonfield, New Jersey six months ago. She’d joined a counseling practice across the bridge in Philly as a behavioral health specialist.

Nancy hustled her butt into a stall before a tear could fall and she was caught by someone coming in to use the bathroom. An overwhelming feeling of loneliness suffocated her as she wished for her mom or Daphne. Even though they were only a phone call away, they were probably off doing their own thing and could do without her drama. Daphne and her husband, Adrian, were most likely cozied up butt-naked somewhere in that huge house they lived in. And Madeline out with co-workers at some fancy club in Philly to bring in the new year. This once she would have to tough it out until the morning.

“Oh no,” Nancy mumbled under her breath as she made her way to the sink to wash her hands. Carefully, she set her clutch on the vanity next to the woman who she’d almost ruined her proposal. Turning on the water, Nancy eyeballed her reflection and then the woman. When their eyes met, Nancy smiled although she was miserable. “Congratulations.”

A brief stint of counseling taught her it was okay to show kindness even in the midst of chaos.

Blue eyes sparkled at Nancy as the woman smiled and wriggled the fingers on her left hand, displaying a sizable diamond. “Thank you! Isn’t it gorgeous?” she beamed, now holding her hand practically under Nancy’s nose.

Nancy couldn’t help laughing. Girlie was acting like they were besties. “It is.”

Rhyme and Reason by Nia Forrester – Now Available!

Hi All!

Author Nia Forrester has a new release! Rhyme and Reason is now available. Here’s a little peek at the story:

Rhyme and Reason by Nia Forrester

Stand-Alone: yes
Series: Afterwards
Publisher: Stiletto Press, LLC
Publication Date:  April 19, 2019
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Contemporary Fiction, New Adult
Heat Level: Sensual

***

About the story:

“Maybe friendship is all that’s realistic for us right now.”

With those words, Zora ended their long-distance relationship, shattering Deuce’s vision of a life with the only woman he’s ever loved. But after months of silence, he thought he was over it. He’d moved on, hadn’t he? And as far as he knew, she might have done the same. Now Zora is back from California, and he’s thrown into an immediate tailspin. Nothing’s changed.

She’s the one, the only, his rhyme, and his reason …

But this ain’t no college romance. There are serious, grown-folks’ obstacles standing in the way, and the other woman in his life isn’t even the half of it.

And sometimes growing up might mean moving on …

Over a few short summer weeks, Deuce and Zora will have to decide whether the great love they shared in the past, is enough of a foundation to build a future.

Excerpt:

He found her sitting in the dark, in the small living room that was flanked on one side by changing areas, and about fifteen feet of windows, and on the other by a small apartment-like living space, complete with kitchenette, bedroom and bathroom. When Deuce entered, she barely looked up.

“Hi,” he said, collapsing on the two-seater sofa next to her.

“Hey.”

Her feet were propped up on the coffee table. Deuce lifted them and turned her, so they rested on his lap instead, and she was facing him.

“Are you really donating fifty-thousand dollars to my cousin?” she asked.

“Yeah. I really am.”

“Can you afford that?”

He looked at her expressionless of a moment and then they were both laughing.

“You know what I mean. I mean, is it worth …”

“It absolutely is.”

“You think he’s that good?”

“I think he’s good, yeah. I don’t know anything about filmmaking, or documentaries. But I do know he’s your cousin, and I know he gave me something tonight. Something I’m not sure you ever would’ve given me. And it was worth a hell of a lot more than fifty-grand.”

“What’s that?” Her voice was quiet.

“A reason,” Deuce said.

Zora said nothing, but instead looked away from him, and out at the infinity pool.

“I love that pool,” she said dreamily. “It’s the nicest pool I’ve ever been in. I’ve never been in or seen a nicer pool since.”

“Am I right, Zee?” he asked, using his forefinger to turn her head so she was facing him again. “Was all that the reason you …”

“Regan’s very pretty,” she said unexpectedly.

“She is,” he acknowledged, eyes fixed on her.

“Beautiful, even.”

“Yeah, maybe. Probably.” Deuce shrugged.

“She looks exactly like your type. Actually, she looks like she would be basically every man’s type.”

“Zee …”

“I sort of wanted to kick her ass when I met her,” Zora said, her tone matter-of-fact.

Then they were laughing again, but there was an edge of sadness to hers.

Deuce tugged at her boots, until he got them off. She let him remove them without protest. Dropping them at his feet, he began massaging her insoles. Zora didn’t object to that either.

“Since when have you been flouncing around in high heels all the time?”

“I wasn’t … flouncing,” she said, spluttering into laughter. “I don’t flounce. I wouldn’t even know how.”

“That dude Nicolas sure was staring like you were,” he said. “Is he the one who you were …?”

“Yes.”

“Well, he’s got an ass-kicking coming to him too.”

“No need. He’s … It was just two dates, and anyway you …”

“Don’t say ‘and anyway you’re with someone’.”

“But you are.”

“You know what’s up. Just say the word.”

“And you know me,” she said, shaking her head. “Those aren’t words I’d say.”

ENDGAME (excerpt)

I stepped out of my office into the lobby as Michael got off the elevator. He walked toward me, angry as hell. “How come you didn’t tell me that you were recommending I see another therapist? I trusted you!”

“We explained everything to your management and team rep. They said it was fine that you will be meeting with my partner instead of me. I can’t be objective after what happened yesterday, and this is an important year for you. You need the best person for the job and I’m definitely not it.” I continued to walk toward the elevator.

“I don’t want to hear that bull!” He stopped and grabbed my arm. “You should have told me you didn’t want to see me again.”

“It’s not like that. I just felt you needed someone more qualified than me to help you get through this year. I’m used to rookies, and you are far from a rookie.”

“But what about what I feel I need? I’m not a rookie, so I know what I need, and it’s you.” He looked down at me, speaking with desperation in his voice. “I need you. I don’t want anyone else.”

I almost relented, but even then, the guilt of wanting him to kiss me ate at me. “It’s too late. We already spoke with your team.” I tried to walk away again.

He moved his rigid body in my path. “The hell it is. Whatever you need me to do to make this work, I’ll do it.” We were making a scene and drawing a small crowd. He seemed oblivious that people were looking and possibly even recording us.

I impulsively grabbed his hand, unlocked the office, and pulled him past the reception area to my office. I opened my door and walked inside. Before I could say a word, he closed the door and roughly pushed me against it, kissing me desperately.

At first, I was in shock and didn’t move as his mouth stroked over mine. Then he softly used his tongue, which sent a feverish heat through my veins. I responded, and his hands began exploring my body as he pressed against me.

When his hardness wedged against my stomach, I pushed him lightly and surprisingly, he didn’t resist and stopped kissing me. “I’m sorry.” He rested his forehead against mine.

I looked at him and whispered, “This is why I can’t be your therapist. I can’t resist you.”

“I would rather you work with me than lose you, so I won’t kiss you again. You are so beautiful. When you grabbed my hand and brought me in here…” He shook his head. “That was some sexy shit and I couldn’t stop myself.”

I watched him, not sure what to say.

He stared at my lips, only inches from his. “Like I said, I won’t kiss you again, if you don’t want me to.”

God knows, I really wanted him to do so much more. And when I bit my lip, with no response, he groaned and pushed my legs apart with his knee. He picked me up, wrapped my legs around his waist, and set me on my desk. He kissed me again, and this time I didn’t fight my attraction. His strong arms closed around me and I melted. Between kisses, he asked, “Can you feel how much I want you?”

“Yes.”

Series: Brooks Family, Book 3

Standalone: Yes

Publication Date: August 10, 2018

Publisher: Garden Avenue Press

Genre: Contemporary Romance

It started with a little white lie…
Lindsay Winthrop’s weekly podcast on sex and dating has garnered thousands of listeners across the country, thanks to experience with a loving fiancé she’s been with for years. Except, her husband-to-be doesn’t exist, and now she’s in a bind. With a book deal on the line, she has to find a man fast, and Malik Brooks might be just the man she’s looking for.

If he knows what’s good for him, he’ll stay away from her…
A few years ago, Malik gave up sex and now works hard as a metal sculptor. In doing so, he’s created enough pieces to fill a gallery, and his vow of celibacy has kept him focused. When a major deal falls through, Lindsay makes him an offer he can’t refuse, and all he has to do is pretend to be her fiancé. Sounds easy at first, but after one kiss, he wants more. Then things really get interesting.

Excerpt

Malik walked in holding a Styrofoam cup and brown paper sack and looked very delicious in a chest-hugging orange T-shirt and jeans. Her pulse rate tripled. She wanted him like she never wanted any man before. Breathe.

“Hey.” He gave the room a cursory review, and when the corners of his mouth pushed up into a slow, delicious smile, her toes curled in her shoes.

“What’s in the bag?” Lindsay went to stand in front of him.

“Mexican food from your new favorite place.” He handed the food and drinks to her.

His gaze traveled over her body, and she felt his look as if he’d trailed his fingers over her breasts and waist.

“My new favorite place?” she asked, continuing the friendly conversation despite the way the temperature in the room had raised a few notches. “On Buford Highway, I guess?”

“Of course.”

He was right. It was her new favorite place. She’d been back several times since their trip there.

Lindsay set the items on the table and peeked in the bag.

“A couple of tacos and a burrito,” Malik said. He was much closer now, his voice low and the heat from his body warming her back.

“That’s a lot of food.” She closed the bag.

“You can save some for later.”

Lindsay turned to face him, and he was standing closer than she thought. She reached for the mental strength required not to maul him.

“Why are you all up on me?” She stepped back so her thighs bumped the edge of the desk.

“Why do you think?” He came closer. A few more inches and they’d touch.

“I have no idea. I have no idea why you’re even here,” she whispered, because that’s all she could manage.

Malik hooked a finger in the waistband of her black slacks and pulled until the tips of her breasts touched his chest. His gaze dropped to her lips. “I think you know why I’m here.”

“Why don’t you tell me.”

His gaze flicked up to hers, and their eyes locked. “I’d rather show you.”

With a hand at her nape, Malik slanted his mouth over hers. She gave in without hesitation.

The Breakup Plan by Tia Kelly and Giveaway!

He ruined her wedding day and he’ll do it again until she’s his..

A man without a plan is a shell without purpose.

Which is why I sat down almost nine years ago and put pen to paper mapping out my ten-year plan. I meant business. Everything that could set me up for a lifetime of joy had to go down on the list, and every day I worked my ass off to fulfill it.

Open my own sports agency. Check.

Earn first million by my thirtieth birthday. I did that a week before I turned 26.

Negotiate the most lucrative contract in Major League’s history. Did that, too. Then went and broke my own record. (Thanks big bro!)

I could go on, but this isn’t about bragging. It’s me admitting in the midst of drafting something that helps shape and mold much of my success, I made a costly mistake.

One day I realized all those entries with corresponding checkmarks are pointless if I never factored into the equation the most important goal of all. Avery.

Perhaps way back then I wasn’t ready to see how much my best friend of fifteen years deserved that number one spot in my life. Maybe I was blind since the whole settle down and get married scenario wasn’t my thing since, well, forever. But now that I’m aware of the role I need her to fill in my life, there’s no such thing as letting go until I can convince her to be mine.

Considering she’s about to marry someone else does make winning her heart a little bit dicey. But if there’s anything you should ever know about me is that I always play to win. And losing Avery is non-negotiable.

Excerpt

She sits down on a padded wicker loveseat. Instead of going to a chair, I sit beside her. Close enough that her thigh brushes against mine a few times. Avery shifts to balance her plate and scoot away a few inches, but my proximity leaves little room for her to go.

“Tell me about the email.”

Her feigned interest in the food on her plate distracts me from the conversation. Avery was once a self-declared foodie, but this new version of her makes no sense, and coincides with him.

I slice a piece of sausage and drop it on her plate between the quinoa and blueberries she must have requested but has understandably lost interest in. “Try it.”

“Drew.”

Forking two of the pieces off my plate for myself, I chew and nudge her again. “Eat.”

“Stop talking with food in your mouth.” When she rolls her eyes and smirks at me, I know I’m making progress.

“I will if you eat that,” I say, pointing my fork at the sausage. Chef Laurel flew selections like this organic sage chicken sausage in just for Avery. He would likely grunt if I wanted something from the Whole Foods around the corner from my house. And I’m the one paying him. She has to know it. I know I do. Chef Laurel is wrapped around this woman’s finger, almost as tightly coiled around it as me.

Nah, there’s no way she could have anyone else as twisted around that pinky as tight as me.

Avery just has this effect on people. Even random strangers love doing things for her, because she’s always so giving of herself, and cares without expectation. Avery also adores Chef Laurel, and when he prepared a meal once with this sausage from whatever city we were visiting at the time, Avery made it known for an entire week straight how much she loved it. To thank her for appreciating his food, Chef often sends for it just because he knows how much she enjoys it.

And like the voice of temptation, it’s my duty to remind her of these things. “You know you want to.”

The corner of her mouth twitches until she graces me with a sweet smile. “I do.”

“I know. Here.” I add a full link and one of my pancakes to her plate.

To my surprise, she doesn’t protest anymore. I do catch a moment of remorse after her first bite, but by the second one, she’s forgotten all about the pile of quinoa on her plate.

“Mmmmm.”

This is where things get uncomfortable. Not like it was beachside yesterday—I’m talking about the way she just woke up my penis with that moan, like she did the other night. It doesn’t help that her head rolls back, as she has no shame indulging in what is obviously a rare moment of ecstasy—hair falling back over the sofa cushion, that sensual neck of hers daring me to move closer for a nip, and those brown eyes damn near rolling back into yesterday do me all the way in.

So how do I handle it? I take some more food off my plate and give it to her. You think I’m going to pass up the chance at watching someone as beautiful as Avery damn near have an orgasm over some buttermilk pancakes and maple syrup?

Avery takes another bite of my pancake and follows it with a quick swipe of the tongue to catch a drop of syrup hanging on to the edge of her bottom lip.

“What did the email say?”

Huh? I blink to shake the trance she put me in. “Oh. Donovan approved the budget and next month’s shooting schedule.”

Whatever I said instantly robs Avery of the blissful expression on her face that I was enjoying with her. I’ve heard about sexual encounters that fizzle with a quickness, so I’m guessing this would be the food version.

“What?” I ask.

Setting her plate down on the table in front of us, Avery starts to move in careful, measured ways. “Next month?”

“Why is that a surprise? You’re the one that drafted the schedule.”

She nods, and when she bites on her lip, I know whatever she’s about to say is not going to be good. “About that.”

Leveling my eyes on her, I put my plate down then drop an arm across the back of the sofa. “Avery.”

“I was hoping we could discuss this when we got back to Philly, but I guess I might as well tell you now.”

“Tell me what, Avery? Just spill it.”
