Can a man and a woman be best friends without somebody catching feelings?
Travis Barber and Sade Styles are best friends of the opposite sex. Despite what everyone thinks, they are not getting busy…yet.
Co-owners of a popular barbershop/salon in named CoEd, Travis and Sade spend the bulk of their days together. But when Sade’s apartment lease runs out and Travis offers her the spare bedroom of his newly built house, will they end up sharing more than just the utilities?
This witty, fast-paced romance seeks to answer the question: can a man and a woman be best friends without crossing that fine line into the land of lovers. Best case scenario, nothing happens. Worst case scenario, they get to know each other a little too well and end up hating each other!
Are Travis and Sade making the best move for their friendship?
It was only a matter of time before Sade and I bumped uglies. The stars were lined up too perfectly for it not to happen. The air was too warm and sticky for us not to be hot and bothered. Lalah Hathaway was singing too good; hitting those low notes and high notes too right for us to not be affected. And Sade was wearing that black dress too well for me not to be nigh animalistic. A part of me laughed at the way I felt. Like Cookie Monster from Sesame Street when he tried to kick his cookie habit and he just couldn’t take it anymore. “Me must have cookie! NomNomNomNomNom.” In my mind, I’m chomping on that cookie and crumbs are flying everywhere.
Lalah was singing Forever, For Always, For Love. Sade and I were standing right in front of the stage. Lalah was looking good and all but that night, I only had eyes for Sade Styles, my poor little helpless cookie. She had no idea what she was in for. And she wasn’t making things better, the way she allowed me to drape my arms around her. And that dress? My goodness, that dress! It was form fitting and Sade’s form was hitting on all cylinders. The back of the dress…let me back up a minute…there was no back of the dress. It was only Sade’s skin. It’s a shame that all I could think about was sinking my teeth into her flesh. I tells ya! I was going to make Cookie Monster proud tonight.
Where was I? Yes, the dress. It cupped her backside! Did you hear what I said? The dress cupped her bottom so sweetly that I got weak in the knees when she walked out of the bathroom with it on earlier that evening. And she had the nerve to turn around, wiggle her hips and say, “What do you think?” Sade, I thought, you don’t wanna know what I’m thinking right now.
“What do you think about the dress?” she asked again when I didn’t reply immediately.
You see, it’s hard to talk when a cat has your tongue. I said something; I don’t even remember what it was. Whatever it was, it made her laugh.
“Boy, you are too silly. Let’s go.”
I was watching her walk in front of me, watching her turn around and smile as I lagged behind.
“Something wrong with your leg?” she asked. “Why are you walking like that?”
Well, Sade, I am extremely aroused right now. And I’m trying to situate myself without you noticing. “Must be a Charley horse,” I lied.
“You need me to rub your leg?”
Come on, man! You’re playing dirty now.
“Nah, I’m good.”
She paused, turned around and said, “Are you sure?”
Let me stop right here and tell you about how Sade smelled at that point in time. It was something sweet, something devious. The perfume was actually visible to me, surrounding her like a beautiful cloud. A hand formed from that cloud and its cloudy arm extended toward my nose. Tickled it. Gently caressed my chin. I swear the cloud asked me if I wanted Sade. I nodded my head yes.
“So you do want me to rub your leg?” she asked.
“No!” If she touched me right now…
“Okay,” she said as she turned around slowly. “Maybe later?”
I shook my leg. Situated myself. This was going to be a long evening.

I have a lot to celebrate these days! Can you believe that it’s been four years since I published my first book? I have to say – it’s been an awesome four years! When I started my writing journey, I had no idea it would be this rewarding. During this time, I have established great friendships with some amazing authors and don’t even get me started talking about my readers – they ROCK!
But before I tell you what’s been going on lately (and what’s coming), let me give you a sneak peek at my next release – SEDUCING THE BOSS LADY – book 5 of the Jenkins Family Series. Many of you probably remember Peyton “PJ” Jenkins. She’s an electrician and also the senior manager of Jenkins & Sons Construction. Well, Peyton has finally found love -again, unexpectedly, of course. Here’s a sneak peek:
Master electrician, Peyton Jenkins, is tired of being the responsible Jenkins’ girl. She’s ready to hand over the reins of the family business for a chance to live life and find love. However, fear of getting hurt again keeps her from letting down her guard. That is until her world intersects with bad-boy, Michael Cutter. Their sparks ignite a passion that can’t be denied.
Private investigator, Michael Cutter, has no intention of falling for another pretty face, not even someone as beautiful as Peyton. But her smokin’ hot body and sass can’t be ignored. She desires love and commitment, yet the sins of his father continue to haunt Michael, deterring him from pursuing any relationship other than a casual fling.
Will their pasts keep them from taking a chance on love? And will love be enough to heal old wounds?
Peyton glanced at the boarding pass in her hand to confirm her row and seat. 4A.
Annoyance jockeyed within her. Of course, someone would be sitting in 4A because that’s the way her morning had been going. First getting to the office at three and losing track of time, then running for her first flight only to be told once she was on the plane that it was delayed. Then landing in Miami thirty minutes late and having to run through yet another airport.
“Excuse me. You’re in my seat,” Peyton said to the man who was on his cell phone, papers and a file folder spread across the seat near the window as if he owned the whole row, using it as his office. “Excuse me,” she said a little louder when he ignored her.
Finally, he glanced up.
Peyton’s breath caught, and she swallowed hard. Hypnotic, light-brown, almost hazel-colored eyes met hers and she struggled to keep her mouth from hanging open. The man’s eyes, such a startling contrast against his tawny brown skin, stood out like a beacon in the night, guiding a lost soul home.
His intense gaze started at her slicked back hair and did a leisure crawl down her body, taking in every inch of her until he reached her black pumps. Suddenly, Peyton wished she had dressed a little sexier. Those gorgeous eyes met hers again, and her pulse kicked up. He didn’t speak, didn’t smile, nothing. But it was as if a magnetic force passed between them, his scrutiny pulling her in as he studied her face and she studied his.
Peyton’s throat went dry as she stood motionless.
“I’m sorry, ma’am, but we need you to take your seat.” The flight attendant slammed closed the bin above Peyton’s head.
Poof. The spell was broken.
“And sir, I’m going to have to ask you to put your cell phone away as we prepare for takeoff.”
Peyton straightened and finally found her voice again. “You’re in my seat.”
Come along on this journey with Peyton (and Mr. Gorgeous Eyes) as they banter, laugh together, and fall madly in love. SEDUCING THE BOSS LADY coming – Friday, June 10, 2016!
This year I had the pleasure of traveling to Detroit, Michigan for the Romance Slam Jam conference. As usual, it was great hanging out with fellow authors and having readers come up to me and discuss my books – that never gets old! Like I said, my readers ROCK! They make me want to keep writing!
The weekend was filled with laughs and learning opportunities. I think my favorite event (besides Romancing Family Feud) was Friday night’s Riverboat Dinner & Cruise. The organizers laid the night out perfectly. There was great food, dancing, giveaways and A LOT of laughs…and cheering (like when author Deborah Mello’s mother won the dance contest)! It was nice to see authors and readers hanging out and having a good time together.
Next year, RSJ will be held in Los Angeles. Visit Rsjconvention.org for more information.
Building Relationships Around Books (BRAB – book club)
Just a reminder – I’ll be attending BRAB’s Reading Warriors Retreat Thursday, October 6- Saturday, October 8, 2016 in Memphis, Tennessee. There’s still time for you to register and reserve your hotel room (but hurry). It’s going to be a fun weekend with authors and readers. I would love to see you there!
Recently, my book SIN CITY TEMPTATION (Harlequin Kimani), was chosen for a Reviewers Choice Award by Romance in Color! This was a wonderful surprise! Check out their review for SIN CITY TEMPTATION: http://romanceincolor.com/Review_2015/Review_Sin_City_Temptation_Cooper_SF_0315.html
Future Projects & Book Series
I have a full schedule over the next few months. Now that the Jenkins Family Series is coming to an end, I have a couple of new series starting at the end of this year and early 2017. Jenkins & Sons Construction Series, as well as Atlanta’s Finest Series is coming soon. Both will be contemporary romance, but Atlanta’s Finest will have some suspense elements for those who like a little action (and drama) in their stories.
I’m also working on a fun project, coming at the end of this summer, with my good friends Candace Shaw and Delaney Diamond. I can’t wait to tell you more about this project – soon!
In the meantime, keep a look out for SEDUCING THE BOSS LADY – coming in a few days!

After five years in prison, Kareem Henderson is starting his life over. Though business is good at his barbershop, his goal is to open a high-end gentlemen’s salon. But the road back is rough, and he needs connections in the society he once snubbed to make his dream a reality. He just never expected his second chance to come from the sexy female barber he hired last year.
Patrice “Neecie” Baldwin escaped the pressure of being the perfect daughter in one of North Carolina’s most prestigious families to live life on her own. When family responsibilities call her home, she fears going back will expose her to the pressures that nearly ruined her. Neecie needs a shield, and tall, handsome, bad boy Kareem seems impenetrable. So she offers him a deal: If he’ll pretend to be her fiance, she’ll introduce him to all of her well-connected relatives.
But the more time they spend together, the more the irresistible attraction between them builds. They’re from such different worlds, but can this fake relationship make the cut and become something very real?

It’s release day! Woo hoo! OPERATION MIDNIGHT, book 4 of the Reunited Series is now available for your reading pleasure! This is Wiz and Olivia’s story.
You remember them right? Wiz is the computer guru who has helped some of his Navy SEAL brothers (Quinn and Malik) get their women out of some harrowing situations. And something you probably didn’t know – when Tyler (from Blue Roses) called on Quinn’s help to dig into Dallas’s background, guess who Quinn called. You got it – Wiz!
As for Olivia, she first made her appearance in Rendezvous with Danger (Quinn & Alandra’s story) when the guys (and Alandra) took a trip to D.C. and stayed at Olivia’s townhouse. She had a bigger role in Truth or Consequences (Malik & Natasha’s story) where she befriended Natasha, argued with Malik about calling her Ollie, and when she and Wiz announced that they were getting remarried.
Well, in OPERATION MIDNIGHT, we get to learn more about Wiz and Olivia – their life together before their divorce, as well as how they never stopped loving each other. We’ll journey with them through some trying times as they leap over a few more hurdles in their race to say “I do” one last time.
No bad deed goes unpunished…
Former Navy SEAL turned private investigator, Cameron “Wiz” Miller, has loved only one woman, his ex-wife, Olivia. She’s beautiful, talented and the sweetest person he knows. With plans to remarry her, there is nothing she could ask of him that he wouldn’t do except … one thing.
Olivia has loved Wiz since high school. He is her hero. Her protector. She understands his hesitation to search for the woman who left her for dead. Forgiveness has been a long time coming, but Olivia has made peace with what happened. Wiz hasn’t. For him, forgiveness is not an option.
But the sins of the past have come back to haunt Wiz, placing Olivia in danger. He must tap into his military training and every alliance he has formed over the years to save her. But is it too late? Will he and Olivia ever get that happily-ever-after?
I want you to find my sister.
Wiz stormed into the living room and snatched his pants from one of the chairs. His heart thumped wildly at the words he thought he would never hear. He couldn’t wrap his head around her request. Clearly she had forgotten about all the crap her sister had done.
“It’s like suddenly I don’t even know you.” Olivia’s voice broke into his thoughts when she silently entered the room.
Wiz shook his head and stepped into his slacks, keeping his back to her. “You know me. You know me well enough to understand that I would rather swallow a grenade than to have your sister in our lives.”
She sighed loudly. “Cameron, I didn’t say I want her in our lives. I’d like to connect with her for nothing more than a conversation.”
Fastening his pants, he glanced over his shoulder to find her standing near the bedroom door. The satiny red robe she wore stopped just above her knees, the color bringing out the warmth in her smooth, dark chocolate skin. His breath hitched as his gaze drifted slowly down her shapely body emphasized by the sash cinched tightly around her narrow waist. Damn if a certain part of his anatomy didn’t spring to attention. He knew what lay beneath the thin material. He knew how soft every inch of her skin was to the touch. And he knew that if he stayed in that room much longer, he would tell her whatever the heck she wanted to hear. Everything but the truth that is.
His gaze moved back up to her face and his heart leapt into his throat. The love radiating in her eyes, even after the way he had spoken to her made the vice around his heart tighten even more. He felt like crap for denying her of her request.
Damn Keisha. Even when she wasn’t around, she was still wreaking havoc. Just the thought of her made him want to rip something apart. But then there was Olivia. Staring at her now, the unyielding love he had for her made him want to take the three short steps it would take to reach her, and pull her into his arms. He wanted to come clean and tell her what happened to her sister all those years ago. But the bastard in him stayed rooted in place because he had vowed to take that one secret to his grave.

A prescription for sweet satisfaction…
Pediatrician Macy Carter has been so busy expanding her practice she’s had no time to build the family she craves. Her late, much-loved surrogate father apparently had some matchmaking in mind when he arranged for a sexy architect to take over his home and company. Too bad Derek is a single dad who’s been there, done that, and intends to remain unattached. Their priorities are totally out of sync. Their chemistry? Unbelievably potent.
Thanks to his former mentor, Derek Logan just inherited an architectural business, a house and the gorgeous client next door. He’s keeping away from forever relationships, but this doctor’s sensual touch is addictive. Helping Macy build her dream medical complex awakens Derek to how much more he now wants out of life. But has he hesitated too long to prove he’s ready for and deserving of her love?
“What time is the car supposed to be here?” Macy asked from the hotel bathroom where she was standing in a pink bra and panty set, putting on her makeup. Derek’s suggestion to spend the night at the hotel after the awards banquet had been a great idea. After enjoying food, drinks and dancing late into the night, all she had wanted to do was find the nearest bed and fall asleep. Of course, Derek had other plans.
A smile spread across her lips as she recalled their private celebration. Two dozen roses, huge, chocolate covered strawberries, and champagne were waiting for her when they made it up to their hotel suite. Derek always made her feel special, but last night had been different. The way his seductive gaze caressed her throughout the evening had her body yearning for his touch. Her heart swelled just thinking about how he had thoroughly worshipped every inch of her body as they made love until the wee hours of the morning.
“The car will be here in about an hour,” Derek said, interrupting her thoughts. She lowered the mascara wand and glanced at him over her shoulder as he leaned against the doorjamb. He stood there with his dress shirt hanging open, revealing his muscular chest and rock-hard abs. His pants were zipped, but he hadn’t fastened them, nor had he buckled his belt, causing them to hang low on his hips. The man’s body was absolute perfection.
Her pulse quickened when the corner of his lips lifted into a flirtatious smile. “I was thinking we could grab lunch before heading home, but then again, the way you’re undressing me with your eyes, maybe you have something else in mind.”

First, let me introduce you to a man you’d love to cuddle up with! When I think of a man who is so wonderful that he’ll make your toes curl, I think of my husband (smile) and then I think of Tyler Hollister, the hero in Blue Roses, book 1 of my Reunited Series (a romantic suspense). Tyler is wealthy, intelligent, a real sweetheart who is madly in love with a woman who is…um, how should I say…not the easiest woman to love. Oh, and did I happen to mention that he’s fine?! Here, check out Tyler and Dallas’s story:
Where most women would welcome love from a wealthy, good-looking man, Chicago-based investment manager, Dallas Marcel, is not one of them. She will never let a man control her life again. That includes handsome entrepreneur, Tyler Hollister. Dallas is on track to making partner and she’s not letting anything or anyone get in her way. But when her life is put in danger, and a Ponzi scheme ignites a SEC investigation of her firm, she realizes the one man she’d banned from her heart, might be the only one who can save her career and her life.
Tall, dark, and handsome, Tyler Hollister can have any woman he wants, but he only wants one – Dallas. When he starts talking marriage, she breaks things off between them, claiming she doesn’t want a romantic entanglement to hinder her plight to making partner. A chance meeting, six months later, brings them face to face and Tyler soon realizes the intense sexual attraction they once shared is stronger than ever. But he swore he was done with her. Except he finds out her life is in danger, and his protective instincts take over. Can he save her life without losing his heart … again?
Dallas’s eyes drifted shut as she attempted to fight the drowsiness that suddenly surrounded her. Never in her life had she felt so weak. Why now? Why did this accident have to happen now? On track to make partner at her investment firm, she had too much going on in her life to be laid up in a hospital bed staring at walls. She had worked too damn hard to let a stupid car accident keep her from accomplishing the one thing she wanted more than anything – a partnership.
Her eyes fluttered open again. This was the first time she’d noticed the colorful balloons floating above her, attached to something at the head of the bed. It was thoughtful of the nurses, assuming they were the ones who left them, but Dallas preferred to be home…in her own bed, and in her own room. If only she had the strength to move. Between whatever crap they were giving her for pain and the tight bandages around her midsection she felt like a mummy lying in an open tomb. And the thought of sneaking out was out of the question. She glanced at her elevated leg and cursed under her breath at the cast. It was only then did her gaze zone in on the lone figure sitting in the chair near the window, his eyes closed.
What’s he doing here?
Tyler. The moonlight gleamed through the open blinds, casting a stunning glow around him. He looked like an angel, but Dallas knew he was far from that. He was charming, generous and the sweetest man she’d ever met, but a force to be reckoned with when it came to his business and protecting those he loved. It was his possessiveness that reminded her of a time in her past; a time when she had vowed never to let another man control her life.
Dallas fixed her eyes on his attractive face – still as fine as she remembered. Smooth brown skin stretched over strong cheekbones, and a neatly trimmed mustache and goatee framed his inviting mouth. With lips so irresistibly kissable, she had to steady her breathing to keep the heart rate monitor from going crazy.
As if sensing her watching him, Tyler opened his eyes. When his gentle gaze met hers, her breath caught and her heart slammed against her chest. Oh, God. Give me strength. Those dark, sexy eyes would forever be her weakness.
“Hey there.” He rose to his full six-four height and walked to the bed. Towering over her, he swept a few strands of hair away from her face, which was something he used to do often. That small gesture alone made her feel warmth she hadn’t felt in months. “How are you feeling?” His smooth, velvety voice made her body tremble. She wished she had energy and a fan, because she was pretty sure her temperature had shot up to 120 degrees in just those few short seconds.
She gazed into his eyes. After they’d broken up, there were many days she wanted to call and tell him she loved him and wanted him back, but it would’ve been a mistake. He wanted marriage and a family. She couldn’t give him that.
Tyler leaned closer, affording her the pleasure of his fresh, masculine scent. She might’ve had a slight headache, but there was definitely nothing wrong with her sense of smell.
“Can I do anything for you?”
Yeah, you can move away from the bed, is what she wanted to say, his nearness wreaking havoc on her willpower – her desire to touch and kiss him was overwhelming. Instead she asked, “Can I have some water?”
“Of course.” He poured her a cup from the pitcher sitting on the bedside table and brought the straw to her lips. “Anything else?”

It is with great pleasure that I introduce an author friend of mine and my special guest – Synithia Williams! Synithia is the author of You Can’t Plan Love, and Worth the Wait (her latest title). So, let’s get started.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, Synithia.
I’ve loved reading romance novels since I was 13 years old. I hand wrote my first romances in high school, but didn’t take my writing seriously at the time. I concentrated on college, then work, then marriage, then having kids. It wasn’t until 2010 that I decided to try to turn writing from a hobby into a potential career. I consider writing my part-time job. Full-time, I work on sustainability initiatives in the Midlands of South Carolina.
What is your writing process? Do you outline, fly by the seat of your pants or a combination of both?
My writing process keeps evolving. I started by just flying by the seat of my pants, then I tried outlining my stories, but could never stick with the outline. I recently read a book on screenwriting called Save the Cat and one thing it mentioned was starting out with defining what your story is about. My current work in progress is following this idea. I’ve figured out what my story is about, and am flying by the seat of my pants writing it with a very rough outline.
Lol! Way to use all of the writing processes, Synithia!
Okay, I know you’re not supposed to show favoritism but who’s been your favorite character to write?
I liked writing my men: Malcolm and Jared. I don’t know what it says about me, but I love figuring out what makes them tick, why they fight falling in love and finally getting them in bed.
Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
I have several, but none set in stone. My critique partners have changed with each book I write due to schedule changes. I have used the same beta readers to give me feedback. I wish I had one steady critique partner though.
What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
I’m working my way through J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood Series (thanks to author Chicki Brown putting me onto them). I put them on hold at the library and get so excited when I get the message saying the next in the series is ready.
So tell us about your latest story, Worth the Wait.
After Tasha Smith is dumped yet again because of her virginity, she decides it’s time to stop saving herself for marriage and start dating like women in the twenty-first century. She sets out to find a man rumored to be good enough in bed to relieve her of the nuisance, but discreet enough to keep her request a secret. Jared Patterson seems like the perfect candidate. Yet after one searing kiss, she wonders if she’ll escape the night unscathed.
Jared’s job as a successful fitness instructor and entrepreneur has helped him keep a string of meaningless relationships from the east to the west coast. After learning the hard way that women can’t be trusted, he has no qualms going from one sex only relationship to the next. Although Tasha is one of the few types of women he avoids—a good girl—the man in him can’t turn down her tempting offer.
What starts out as a onetime thing quickly turns into an affair neither want to stop. But when an unexpected situation drastically alters their relationship, it leaves them both asking if it was Worth the Wait.
What was your inspiration behind this book?
The idea for the book came from two separate thoughts. When I wrote my first novel, You Can’t Plan Love, I knew I wanted to give Jared his own story. He was so against settling down and I tried to think of what type of woman would make him commit. Of course opposites attract and you can’t get more opposite of promiscuous than virginal. Then I wondered what it would be like to date nowadays if you’re saving yourself for marriage. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a guy after a few dates. “Sorry, no sex unless you put a ring on it.” Voilà, the idea for my story was made.
If you were going to cast the characters of your book, what actors would get the part?
Oh man, I should know this. Hmmm, I really like Dolvett Quince who did Season 12 of the Biggest Loser, only with a different voice. Tasha would be…Cree Summer when she played Freddy in A Different World in the early seasons.
Here’s a brief excerpt from Worth the Wait
Tasha’s attention went back to the bed. It couldn’t be ignored. She walked over to it. At five feet four inches she considered herself average height, but she would need a stepstool to get on it. How many women had he slept with in that bed? Probably dozens. The thought excited her. She wanted to experience what other women had with him, and she wanted it in that bed. She ran her hands along the smooth comforter and closed her eyes, imagining herself naked, sliding on the sheets.
“Do you like my bed?”
She snatched her hands away as if she’d been burned. She turned to the closet where Jared stood, watching her. He’d put on a loose fitting pair of jeans and a black shirt he hadn’t buttoned. His feet were still bare. She definitely liked what she saw.
“It’s a nice bed. Is this where we’ll…” Although she knew what she asked she couldn’t say the words.
He walked over, placing his hands on the bed and trapping her between it and him. The heat from his body radiated toward her. Time seemed to freeze as the force of her attraction buzzed within her. If she was going to do this she couldn’t be a ninny. She hesitated, before lifting her hands and placing them on his chest. His skin was surprisingly soft over the hard muscles underneath. He flexed his pecs and she jerked. Her pinky finger accidentally flicking over his flat nipple and his breathing pick up.
He lightly ran a finger down her cheek. “My plan was to wait, but you’re making it very difficult.”
Tasha shivered as he gently traced her earlobe. “How?”
“Because right now all I want to do is take your clothes off, throw you on that bed, and get deep inside you.”
Oh, God, what am I doing? Despite her fear she said, “Then…then do it.”

Synithia, thanks so much for sharing a little bit about yourself! I wish you much success in your writing career!
As most of you know, one of my dreams as a writer is to be featured in an anthology with Beverly Jenkins and Brenda Jackson – two of my favorite authors. I absolutely love reading anthologies whether they’re holiday themes, or subject based -like forgiveness, trust, or finding true love. As long as this anthology include stories by the three of us – I’m good with any theme. With that said though, the other day I did come up with a SUPER cool title for the anthology (which means I already have an awesome theme in mind). I just wish I could share the details with you all, but I figured I should probably keep them to myself until I hear from Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs. Jackson (NOTE: I wanted to use their first names or call them the two BJ’s, but figured it might be too soon).
At any rate, I started thinking about how this could all play out. For example: what will be our process for deciding on a theme for this anthology? As you know I have my own ideas, but I’m looking forward to hearing some of theirs. As for the genre –I’m thinking romance, but these ladies are so talented, it could be sweet, suspense, or historical romance. I also wonder what our book cover will look like. Will it have some gorgeous hunk gracing the cover, or will it portray a sweet, loving scene of romance like candles, roses, or a couple engaged in a loving kiss? I already figured the stories will be listed in this order: first Beverly Jenkins, then Sharon C. Cooper, and then Brenda Jackson. What can I say? I want to be in the middle and have one heavy hitter get us started, and the other bring it on home. Hey, if you’re going to dream, might as well dream big!
Now, during all of this dreaming and planning something dawned on me – will I be able to handle the pressure? We’re talking about two of the romance industry’s most beloved and talented authors! I’m pretty good about trying almost anything once (except for certain foods like slimy oysters and never recreational drugs), but this would be HUGE! Featured in a book with these two women is going to be beyond awesome! This will be one of the most amazing opportunities of my writing career- do I have what it takes? Determination? Courage to hang with the best? An over active imagination? After thinking about this question(s) for all of two minutes, my answer is – heck yeah! I’ll be ready – I’m just waiting for them to call!
Okay, enough about me – what about you? If you’re a writer, who would you want to share a book (anthology) with? Or if you’re a singer or play an instrument, who would you want to share a stage with and why?
Today I have a fabulous blogger, Yawatta Hosby, visiting and sharing her thoughts on love scenes – how much is too much? Please join me in welcoming her! Alright Yawatta, take it away!
Is T.M.I. (Too Much Information) A Turn-off For You?
A guest post by Ywatta Hosby
Are you a visual reader? I love when an author is great with description, causing me to get lost in their story. However, there’s some scenes that should be left to the readers’ imagination.
What scenes, you ask? The ones involving sex, lovemaking, quickies, etc.
I want to feel what the characters feel. I want to sense what’s going on around them. With sex scenes, descriptions should be based more on the emotional aspect instead of the mechanical terms. I like it when the story makes me feel like I’m experiencing the character’s journey with them instead of just reading about a character.
When the scene gets too technical, it comes across as just reading about a character, just looking from the sidelines. To me, too technical or mechanical means describing every single action, every single position, where characters’ mouths and hands are placed every step of the way. Also, when I see “so and so inserted ____ into ____” that’s T.M.I. (Too Much Information), which pulls me right out of the story.
Even if a reader doesn’t have an active sex life, they can still figure out how the process works, especially if they watch TV and movies. So, us readers, don’t need a play-by-play breakdown written for us to comprehend what’s going on.
It’s best to leave some things up for the readers’ imagination. My favorite type of lovemaking scenes are the ones that reveal the emotional side of things and let’s my mind wander, interpreting however I’d like to.
What’s your favorite type of scenes?
And, I love when the writer captures one character’s thoughts, emotions, and perceptions throughout the scene. It gets too confusing when both characters’ thoughts are used simultaneously. The whole point is to connect with the journey of the people you’re reading about; it’s difficult to do that when headhopping is present. Readers will get a sense of everything that’s going on but won’t have time to process it.
I don’t know about you, but I want to process the moment like its a favorite website embedded in my memory. I want to finish reading and go “Oh, they’re so cute together! I hope they last!” I want to get the warm fuzzies like I do every time I watch The Notebook.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Every story doesn’t require sex scenes. If you read Christian, inspirational, or cozy mysteries, then you’ve probably never came across any of these scenes. There’s some genres that forbid it, some that can go either way, and some where if not enough, readers will demand a refund.
I don’t want to read lovemaking scenes that don’t enhance the plot or fit the character’s personality. Then it just comes across as the writer adding those actions because he or she felt they had to in order to sell the novel. In today’s age, sex sells. However, there’s been amazing books that I’ve read where the sex wasn’t mentioned at all, yet it was still a hot, passionate, and steamy novel. The way the authors described make-out sessions or sexual tension was a huge turn-on, so I can only imagine how awesome a lovemaking scene from them would be (if the story required it).
For all the readers out there, is T.M.I. a turn-off for you? Do you enjoy reading sex scenes? Or do you get embarrassed, blushing and hoping no one looks over your shoulder?
